The girls' mother had been abused by her father and then, when he disappears, was raped by some village louts, and became pregnant. So she's not a widow by any means. You even see some things from the dwarf's viewpoint as the novel moves between viewpoints. And the bear is only a bear in that universe - he has come from another universe where he was a young man in a bear costume.
